Back in May, Google and HTC announced plans to start selling Google Play Editions of popular flagship smartphones the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One. Both options provide a way of getting out from under the majority of each company's add-on UI.As noted by TechCrunch, both of the unlocked phones are now available through the Google Play Store, and are expected to ship by July 9.
The Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One are selling for $649 and $599, respectively, as previously announced last month. Neither option--obviously--restricts you to carrier contracts, and are both GSM-capable. And while these unlocked smartphones will provide a more "stock" version of Android, it's worth noting neither is 100 percent without some small inclusion of Samsung or HTC's interface. The Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 can still accept Samsung's flip covers, for example.
The streamlined and similar Android interface may allow some potential buyers to further weigh the hardware options provided by either the HTC One or Galaxy S4. Despite overwhelming sales of the Galaxy S4, HTC is still hoping to find increased sales of its metal-cased smartphone, reportedlyeven hiring Robert Downey Jr. to lead a new ad campaign.
